Why REAL DADS ?
Whether 2 or 17, it is tough being a kid these days. REAL DADS recognizes this. Kids today seem to have more, and greater, issues and problems than their parents ever did. They are indulging in harmful activities and fostering addictions at an earlier age than ever before. Why is this? Is it just ‘generation gap’ or ‘a sign of the times’? Possibly both, but 99% of the time, the problem comes down to parenting. That is not to say that parents are not trying or just don’t care. Busyness, lack of understanding, and a desire to ‘keep the peace’ are all reasons cited by parents for not being as involved as they would like to be. Much of the problem also lies in not knowing just how important the parents’ roles are in raising well-adjusted children and not knowing exactly what those roles are. At REAL DADS, we agree with Robert J. Doman Jr. when he says that “minute for minute, the single strongest influence on a child’s development is that of his or her father.” While it may be a rather daunting thought, it cannot be ignored. REAL DADS wants to challenge fathers to step up and do their most important job—fathering their children. Many fathers today have difficulty balancing work and family, among their other interests. Many fathers are unsure of how to father properly because they may not have had an effective role model. Many fathers also do not realize just how vital their role in the family actually is.
What is REAL DADS?
REAL DADS exists to give fathers help in those areas. We want to help every father to become just a bit better (or even a lot better!). Our ultimate goal is to get fathers involved in the lives of their children. We hope to accomplish this through numerous methods:
· Informative Website
· Regular Emails
· Information Pamphlets
· New Father Classes
· Other Specialty Classes
· Counselling Sessions
· Event Planning
· Information Designed for Unique Fathers
· Statistics
· Strategies
· Tips
· Merchandise
REAL DADS is a not-for-profit organization that just wants kids to get the parenting they deserve and give fathers the tools to give their kids the parenting they should.
Our Motto
“Father First...Friend Second” is more than an organizational motto –it what effective fathering is based upon. It is virtually impossible to be an effective father at the same time as trying to be a best friend to your child. The two can overlap, but they cannot be synonymous. Would a kid’s best friend tell them to be home by 11? Of course not, but a father should establish a curfew. Once fathers understand their priority of being a father first and a friend second, then they will almost surely be a much better father.
Who is REAL DADS for?
Obviously, for fathers! But also for fathers-to-be, grandfathers, divorced fathers without custody or with custody, and almost any kind of unique situation you can think of. Even young men who will not be fathers in the near future can benefit tremendously from this organization, to prepare them for the future.
The Challenge!
There is no doubt that fathers want to have good children who will develop into productive citizens, but these kinds of kids do not just happen. They are taught to be that way. Fathers have a crucial role in this teaching that cannot be substituted by mothers - mothers have their own vital role. How many men are willing to take the challenge of being a REAL DAD? Will it be easy? No. Will it go smoothly? No. Will it pay off in the future? Yes! Will it lead to a more “functional” family? Yes! Is it important to your child? Yes! As long as you are willing to be a father first...friend second, we will be with you every step of the way!
