What real dads is all about...

REAL DADS endeavours to make a positive difference in the practices of fathers by equipping them with knowledge, through education and literature, thereby enabling them to mentor their children so they can grow up healthy, well-adjusted and with a highly positive role model of what a father and a man should be.

REAL DADS will try to do this through offering courses, regular e-mails, conducting seminars, providing resources, facilitating events, counselling, and informing fathers of good practices.

The Importance of Fatherhood

Fatherhood is both a privilege and a responsibility.  It means much more than bringing home money for the family to live.  Most fathers are unaware of the crucial role they play in the lives of their children from day one.  Canada, as a country, has yet to fully acknowledge the vital role fathers play in raising healthy, bright, well-adjusted children, who have strong morals.  Real Dads is trying to make Canadian men aware of this important correlation, and equip them to help themselves and their children.

There are also a lot of new fathers or fathers-to-be who never had a positive male role model during their childhood, so proper parenting is a foreign concept to them.  Real dads is committed to helping these men find their real roles with their children, and teaching them what it means to be a father.  Even if you had a positive male role model in your life, society has changed.

No matter what your reason is for visiting real dads, each and every one of us has the ability to be a better father.  real dads would like to help all fathers improve their parenting ability in some way.

Based on a survey conducted in Newmarket, Ontario, with fathers and their children (high school age), some interesting results came to light:

  • 1/3 of our children believe that their fathers do not spend enough time with them, while 72% of fathers do not think they spend enough time!
  • About 70% of 14-year-old boys think their fathers work too much.
  • 14 and 15-year-old girls think that they are around 3rd on their fathers' list of priorities (work was reported as #1).
  • fathers and their children estimate that they spend, on average, less than an hour per day with each other in quality time.
  • when asked to rate how comfortable they were talking about personal issues with their fathers on a scale of 1-10 (1=low), children rated their fathers below 5.
  • almost 80% of fathers want to be more involved in their children's education, but about half of them say they have no time to do so.

Clearly, fathers are struggling to meet the demands of their most important calling - fathering. These statistics can be changed for the better, but we must want to change, and be willing to work at it.  It is simply a matter of changing habits and mindsets.  REAL DADS wants to help fathers do just that!  Show your commitment to change, show your child that you want to be a REAL DAD!  See our EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES link to the right to see how you can improve your parenting or start off on the right track!
