chapter 3: treat the source, not the symptoms

As an educator, I have used this as my mantra for decades - you must treat the source, not just the symptoms, otherwise, the symptoms will come back. Not just the same ones, either, but more and worse ones. I have always believed that you cannot properly teach a child school stuff when they are hungry, or being hit at home, or experiencing daily fighting amongst their parents. School is just lower on the hierarchy.
Right at the beginning of the chapter, Noland gets right to his insights. On pages 35-36, I find it very meaningful when he says, "If you are at the place where you are telling yourself, I can't murder this person, or I can't commit adultery with her, aren't you past the front door and already dangerously into the house?" It's so true! There are certainly different stages of sin, each one sinking us deeper into it than the previous one. It is important to note that he goes on to say on pages 36-37, "If someone stands at your front door with a temptation, just because they are at your door does not mean you have sinned...The opportunity to sin is not a sin." Once we have invited that sin in - it becomes a sin. This is worth remembering!
Another profound passage (to me) is the last full paragraph on page 37. I won't quote it because it is too long, but please have a careful read of it, as it addresses treating the symptoms. Similarly, isn't that what confession is about? I find that people who regularly confess their sins are really just confessing their symptoms, not the source. When we confess our sins to God, we also need to ask Him to help us address the root cause of our sin (which, incidentally, I have found is usually based around pride in some way - at least for me). In fact, later on in the chapter, on page 40, he says, "Confession is not an end, but simply a beginning to the process of restoration." That is actually worth repeating! Do you find yourself confessing the same sin to God fairly regularly, maybe daily? A lot of times it's because we treat it as the end - we've confessed it so we can move on. The problem is the root is still there. Like pulling the head off a dandelion, we haven't really done much at all except taken care of aesthetics for a day.
Finally, so as not to talk too much more, I just want to say that the scripture Noland leaves us with at the end of the chapter, Romans 8:5-6 is one that I personally find very meaningful in my life right now - as in this very minute. It can be such a battle, can't it, guys?

Do men need support? Oh for the love of God, yes! Is it a good idea to "throw your pearls to pigs", to quote a transcendental question Jesus asks us, the answer which is obviously NO!
Guys we all need support, for sure but Noland? This book? Pg. 29 says men who focus on purity as sexual sin have been "muddied and meddled with", but Noland then goes on in Ch3 to essentially do the same thing he critiques in the earlier chapter.
Noland says this in Chapter 3:. "Today in most circles, purity actually means impurity because we have come to see purity, particularly the biblical brand, as some kind of mythical elusive creature."
Say whaaat? What a terribly odd, disjointed comment to make in the heart of this book!
Purity as Jesus had IS elusive for a human, because, as opposed to Jesus, we are tempted in every way and sin in every way possible....even when we try not to! We can ONLY go to Jesus with the recognition of our horribly fallen humanity....and let Jesus teach us to rebuild.
Pg. 36 -. Bible reference is wrong. It's John, not Like 8, and most scholars reject it as being added after. I still love the story!
Pg41- Here is an encouraging message:. God disciplines those He loves.
Pg42- Once again, Noland seems to contradict himself around his own narrowing of the term "purity".
Overall, a somewhat unpleasant read, as I try and make sense of Noland's perspectives.

Hi Brothers,
I have appreciated reading the book - although I admit I am lagging behind. My son and I read this chapter and although I didn't get much of a verbal response to my questions toward him about it, I have seen the 'wheels turning' as we dig into it.
I appreciated the comment on p.36 that "Having a thought is not a sin. That is the introduction of the temptation." - it allowed me to touch base with my son about temptation being real, but we as men need to recognize our ability through the Holy Spirit to not invite the temptation in entertain it - p.37.
The theme of the chapter, getting to the root of the problem and not just dealing with the symptoms was significant to deal with as well. "Who else can right our wrongs? I have personally found on countless occasions that I cannot possibly do this myself. I have tried a thousand times and I have failed a thousand times." (p.41) - With absolute thanks to God, He alone helps in what we cannot do on our own.
And then finally on p.42 - "Jesus Christ can replace your shame with His grace."
Amen to that - thank You Lord Jesus!
Shawn

Hey Brad... just a quick replybto your last point re: Roman's 8... I must have agreed with you long before this bc when I turned to that passage it was one I had previously marked out (outlined with a pencil) to v8. "Those who are in the flesh cannot please God"
That's stark. No matter all the good pretending we do, if we are trying to fool ourselves bit are stuck in the flesh, we can NOT please God.
"... those who live according to the spirit set their mind on things of the spirit".
When our minds are occupied by things of the spirit then it is that much easier (for lack of a better word) to let temptations of the flesh pass by.

I agree that addressing root causes is essential.
